The PlayStation Showcase will be the first flurry of game announcements in the “not-E3” summer of game announcements that typically takes place at the end of May and first half of June. Sony are jumping the queue and getting all their big trailer drops out before anyone else, which is a pretty good way to take control of the conversation.
So what will we see at the Showcase? Well, the biggest game that we know about is Spider-Man 2, and it’s high time that we see gameplay for this game, considering that it’s due out later this year. Sony also has plans to release a large number of live service games, and this would be a great time to set out their stall for some of these – an announcement for the game that Jade Raymond’s Haven Studios is working on would be pretty good to see.
As important as keeping hype levels for PS5 games is, Sony also has a second platform to consider. We’ve had the launch window games of the PSVR 2 with Horizon Call of the Mountain leading the way for PlayStation Studios, but what’s next? We definitely need to see VR games during this showcase, or cross-format games that support both flatscreen and VR play.
And, of course, we can also expect some third party titles to grab some minutes here, with the imminent release of Final Fantasy XVI this summer, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth later this year, and space for smaller projects too. Let’s not forget the impact that games like Kena: Bridge of Spirits and Stray had when they were revealed during the showcase!
So, what are you hoping for from the PlayStation Showcase next week?
